"We are here because we were deeply troubled by how this executive committee came to power. We are here because we are deeply troubled by the usurpation of civic space, and the lack of respect for the values of pluralism, democracy that this new executive committee has demonstrated," said one member of the audience.
With the number of tweets, FB links & ST reports, I couldnt ignore the AWARE saga.
Especially not when it challenges the cultural mandate, something I embraced after the Asian Conference and aspire to live through Creative Figs. Lagi especially not when I'm searching for a female mentor to look up to in the business world. But enough about me.
I emphatise with the "new guards", who were given a vote of no confidence by the 3000-member strong crowd even before the lashing begins yesterday at the EGM. I believe that the new exco probably intended to prove they can make a difference in the lives of non-Christian women, to watch over them and protect their welfare, regardless of unbelief.
However, I can't hide my appall at the way they handled the Q&A and the lack of decorum exhibited... by grown women somemore. The failure to convince and elucidate their intentions gives me more reason to doubt the worthiness of their being on the board. And c'mon, you've gotta back those intentions with your actions and words la. Don't take the platform if you're not qualified for it, Christian or not. Don't even try representing the Christian community if you cannot guarantee that there is no misinterpretation of your intentions.
Just yesterday, I was reading in the train when the usual buzz of background conversations gave way to the voices of 2 bickering women. I looked up just in time to catch the scarf-clad one enunciate "...you can go to hellllll" to another, who shouted back "behave yourself, you crazy woman" before her friend lunged her out at Tiong Bahru.
Scary women...
